According to research published by the Mayo Clinic, chronic pain and mental health disorders are not only common in the general population, but studies suggest that a relationship exists between these 2 conditions. In addition to depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, individuals with chronic pain are at risk of other mental health problems including suicide.
In 2020 there has been over 1,300 deaths linked to drug overdoses in British Columbia. Many of those who turn to illegal drugs initially do so to manage pain.
